THEGovernment Railway Police (GRP) arrested a highly elusive member of the notorious Sansi gang who had successfully evaded law enforcement agencies for over 11 years. The arrested suspect, identified as Satyabhan Sansi, alias Satyabhan, 40, a resident of Bhiwani in Haryana, was carrying a cash reward of Rs 54,000 on his arrest. GRP officials successfully brought the accused to Bhopal from Guwahati Central Jail in Assam on a production warrant to execute 15 long-pending permanent arrest warrants against him, including 13 in Bhopal and two in Itarsi. Po l i c e records indicate that Satyabhan is an active member of the interstate Sansi gang, which specialises in orchestrating organised thefts onboard passenger trains. Operating primarily within crowded general and sleeper coaches, the gang members would slice open passengers’ bags and purses using razor blades or pocket knives to siphoning off cash, gold jewelry, and other high-value personal belongings. The syndicate’s criminal footprint spans across multiple states, including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Assam.

Cyber cell tracks elusive suspect via mobile network location The breakthrough came during a special GRP campaign launched to clear long-pending warrants, which prompted investigators to intensify the search for Satyabhan. After initial raids in Bhiwani, Hisar, and neighboring districts in Haryana yielded no results, the GRP Cyber Cell began monitoring the suspect’s mobile phone location. Investigators observed that his mobile device suddenly became inactive in Guwahati, leading them to contact the Jalukbari police station in Assam, where officials confirmed that Satyabhan was already in judicial custody at the Guwahati Central Jail in connection with a separate criminal offense. Custodial interrogation initiated to unearth interstate safehouses Upon receiving the confirmation, GRP Bhopal secured a formal production warrant from a local court and dispatched a special team to Guwahati to take custody of the suspect. Following his arrival in Bhopal, authorities formally executed all 15 pending warrants charging him with theft, housebreaking, habitual stealing, and destruction of evidence. GRP officers have initiated an extensive custodial interrogation to extract information regarding his active accomplices, interstate operational hideouts, and other unsolved train thefts committed by the gang in recent years.
