Police trace car within an hour, rule out abduction in Manish Nagar incident
A video showing a young woman screaming inside a moving red car triggered panic across Nagpur on Sunday morning after it went viral on social media. However, Beltarodi police traced the vehicle within an hour and confirmed that no kidnapping had taken place.
The incident occurred in Manish Nagar under the jurisdiction of Beltarodi Police Station.
According to police, the young woman, Rashmi
(name changed), and Rohit, a resident of the same locality, are friends.
The dispute reportedly started after Rohit allegedly damaged Rashmi’s two-wheeler a day earlier.
On Sunday morning, Rohit arrived in a red Maruti Swift car (MH-31/GA-6740) to meet her and discuss compensation for the damaged vehicle. Another female friend was also present, and the three got into the car to resolve the matter.
While they were travelling, an argument broke out between Rashmi and Rohit. Police said Rashmi tried to get out of the moving car, but Rohit stopped her. He then allegedly began driving the vehicle rashly in a zigzag manner, prompting Rashmi to scream for help. A passerby who heard her cries suspected that the woman was being abducted and immediately alerted the police.
The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed outside a nearby shop. Soon, the footage began circulating widely on social media.
Beltarodi police launched an investigation and traced the vehicle through its registration number. During the inquiry, officers found that Rohit had borrowed the car from another person. Using the CCTV footage and local enquiries, the police located Rashmi’s residence and questioned everyone involved.
During questioning, Rashmi and her family told the police that the incident arose out of a personal dispute between friends and was not an abduction. Police said the viral video showed only part of the incident, which led many people to draw the wrong conclusion.
After completing the enquiry, Beltarodi police confirmed that no offence of kidnapping or abduction had taken place.
