LACK of funds from State Government has stalled the construction work of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University’s Ravi Nagar sports complex. The construction work of the multi-sports sports complex started with much fanfare but as funds dried up, the construction work has been stopped since last six months. The state government had approved Rs 44,41,38,000 earlier during the university’s centenary year for the construction of a multi-storied indoor sports complex on RTMNU’s land off Ravi Nagar, beside Subhedar Hall on a three acres of land. The project, which generated considerable excitement in its early phases, now faces delays that could impact timelines and community expectations. Authorities are waiting for financing assistance to regain pace. The Public Works Department (PWD) has completed the civil work, but interior development including flooring, CCTV cameras and other essential fittings is yet to begin.

Dr Sambhaji Bhosale, Director,Department ofSports and Physical Education, said thatuntil the funds arereleased from State Government, the work could not be started. “Around Rs 33 crore is required to complete the project fully,” said Dr Bhosale. “The government should issue funds as soon as possible. It will be helpful for the sports fraternity.” Theindoor sports complexis designed tointernational standards and will feature dedicated spaces for volleyball, basketball, handball, table tennis, wrestling, kabaddi, gymnastics, squash, a gymnasium, and a sports medicine room. Itwillalsoincluderestrooms, changingrooms, storeroomson every floor, and lift facilities. Plans include sensible space utilisation such ashangingbasketball boards to allow multisport usage. Detachable seating arrangements have been incorporated to maximise flexibility. Once completed, the complex is expected to be one of the finestin thecountry.RTMNU is also considering a sports hostelin thesecondphaseadjacent to the indoor hall. “If all goes well and funds reachin time, the facilityislikely to be available for sportspersons around March 2027,” Dr Bhosale hoped.
