Chunabhatti police have registered a case of fraud against Dr Mahesh Chandra Sharma, who was allegedly drawing salaries by working concurrently across Government hospitals in three separate districts. The action was initiated following a formal complaint lodged by the Deputy Director of the National Health Mission (NHM). A subsequent police investigation confirmed that Dr Sharma was operating simultaneously in Shahdol, Sheopur, and Khargone districts. The elaborate multi-district employment scam came to light after the Shahdol Lokayukta team caught Dr Sharma red-handed while accepting a bribe of five thousand rupees. Following his arrest, a local newspaper published an investigative report detailing how the accused had been drawing multiple salaries across the state. This media disclosure prompted the National Health Mission to launch an internal inquiry into his employment records.
According to the police, Dr Rakesh Bohre, the Deputy Director at NHM, submitted a formal written complaint detailing the fraudulent activities. The complaint stated that Dr Sharma concealed his true identity and used forged credentials to secure contract positions as a medical officer at three distinct community health centres. By drawing monthly honorariums from multiple state facilities, the accused caused significant financial loss to the Government exchequer.
Following the complaint, the police recorded statements from Dr Bohre and advisor Amitesh Mishra. Their testimonies and subsequent verification of official records confirmed that Dr Sharma was concurrently employed at Primary Health Centre Sahasram in Sheopur, a health facility in Shahdol, and Primary Health Centre Keli in Khargone.
After collecting documentary evidence of the forgery from all three health centres, the police formally registered the criminal case against Dr Sharma.
