Robotic surgery begins at Urology

Staff Reporter :

IN A significant milestone for Government healthcare in Vidarbha, the team of doctors at Urology Operation Theatre at Government Medical College (GMC) and Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, successfully performed its first-ever robotic surgery on Wednesday. A 50-year-old woman suffering from a non-functioning right kidney due to kidney stones underwent a successful Right Robotic Nephrectomy, marking the beginning of robotic urological surgeries at the facility. Until now, robotic surgeries for urology patients were conducted only at GMCH Nagpur, where the department had access to the robotic system only one day a week. With the robotic facility now operational in the Super Speciality Hospital’s dedicated Urology OT, surgeons will be able to perform robotic procedures six days a week, significantly increasing treatment capacity.

The expanded service will enable doctors to perform a wide range of advanced procedures, including kidney transplant surgeries, urological cancer surgeries, and paediatric urology surgeries, using robotic technology. The new facility is expected to greatly benefit patients across Vidarbha by providing minimally invasive, safer, and more precise surgeries, resulting in less pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and earlier return to normal life. The successful surgery was carried out under the guidance of Dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye and Officer on Special Duty Dr Sushma Thakare. The urology team was led by Dr Dhananjay Selukar, Professor and Head of the Department, along with Dr Mahesh Borikar, Dr Nikhilesh Jibhkate, Dr Vishal Narkhede, Dr Darshan Rathi, Dr Tukaram Dolas, Dr Pratik Nishar, Dr Arpit Dev, Dr Hrishikesh Rathod, Dr Arun Gokhale, and Dr Chaitanya Dake. Support was provided by Hospital Administrator Dr Shailesh Gahukar, Dr Bhushan Mahajan, the Surgery Department led by Dr Bhupesh Tirpude, Dr Gayatri Deshpande, and Dr Hemant Bhanarkar, the Anaesthesiology Department headed by Dr Lulu Fatema Wali along with Dr Afreen Khoja, Dr Shreyas Deshmukh, Dr Shrikant, and Dr Mrunal, as well as the nursing and hospital support staff.
