Highway Police, RTO launch special drive with breath analyser checks

In a bid to reduce road accidents on the Balasaheb Thackeray Samruddhi Expressway, the Highway Police, in co-ordination with the Regional Transport Office (RTO), have launched a special round-the-clock drive against drunk driving. A press release issued by Superintendent of Police (SP) Highway Police Lohit Matani stated that joint teams of Highway Police and RTO officials are conducting checks at toll plazas, interchanges, rest areas and other accident-prone stretches along the expressway.

Drivers are being screened using breath analyser devices and those found driving under the influence of alcohol will face strict action under the Motor Vehicles Act and other applicable laws. Officials said the initiative is being taken to prevent accidents caused by drunken driving, particularly during night hours and long-distance journeys on the Expressway. SP Matani appealed to motorists not to drive under the influence of liquor in any circumstances. He urged drivers to follow traffic rules and drive responsibly and keep their safety as well as safety of other road users in mind.
