The family of 26-year-old Rohit Tryambak Gulade from Desaiganj-Wadsa in Gadchiroli district consented to donate his kidneys after he was declared brain stem dead at AIIMS Nagpur.
Rohit, a student, suffered severe head injuries after his motorcycle was hit by an unidentified vehicle on July 12. Despite intensive treatment at AIIMS Nagpur, doctors diagnosed severe brain haemorrhage and, the Brain Stem Death Committee comprising Dr Manish Shrigiriwar, Dr Om Shubham Asai, Dr Bharat Rathod, and Dr Sucheta Meshram at AIIMS declared him brain stem dead.
AIIMS transplant coordinators Vishal Bhandurge and Kirti Punde counseled Rohit’s parents—Tryambak Gulade (58), a former Naib Tehsildar, and Kalpana Gulade (49).
The organ allocation was carried out by the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), Nagpur. One kidney was transplanted into a 38-year-old male patient at AIIMS Nagpur, while the second was allocated to a 29-year-old male patient at Wockhardt Hospital.
ZTCC Nagpur President Dr Manish Shrigiriwar, Secretary Dr Shailesh Gahukar, Transplant Coordinator Dinesh Mandape facilitated the allocation.
Doctors, nurses and staff at AIIMS Nagpur formed an honour corridor to pay tribute to the donor before the organ retrieval. ZTCC Nagpur provided a free ambulance to transport Rohit’s mortal remains to his native place at Desaiganj-Wadsa. Rohit is survived by his parents and sister, Ragini Gulade.
