THEsouthwest monsoon has regained strength over Jabalpur, bringing light to moderate rainfall across the city for the past two days. The fresh spell has ended the recent dry weather and brought much needed relief from heat and humidity. Around one inch of rain was recorded in the city on Sunday. The weather department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in Jabalpur and nearby districts over the next four to five days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of up to 40 kmph are also likely at isolated places. The recent showers have brought down the temperature and made the weather pleasant. The maximum temperature on Sunday recorded at 29.7 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal, while the minimum temperature was 24.2 degrees Celsius.

 

The city had witnessed a prolonged dry spell despite the arrival of the monsoon. Several days passed without significant rainfall, leading to hot and humid conditions. The lack of rain also affected water levels in reservoirs, ponds and rivers. River Narmada and Bargi Dam continue to hold less water than what is generally seen during July. Spokesman of weather department informed that July is normally the wettest month in Jabalpur. The city receives an average rainfall of 429.8 mm during the month, spread over nearly 16 rainy days. The average maximum temperature remains around 31.3 degrees Celsius, while the average minimum temperature is 24.7 degrees Celsius. Humidity during July generally remains high, ranging between 73 and 83 per cent. Residents are now hoping that the forecast of steady rain over the coming days will help fulfil the rainfall deficit and restore normal monsoon conditions in the region.
