IN A landmark development, the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill 2026 amid massive uproar and stormy proceedings by voice vote. On the second day of the Monsoon Session, Technical Education and Skill Development Minister Gautam Tetwal moved a motion to discuss the Bill and BJP MLA Sitaram Sharma began addressing the House, Meanwhile, Congress MLAs trooped to the well of the House, raising slogans and demanding that the legislation be referred to a Select Committee for discussion. However, the UCC Bill was passed by a voice vote. Earlier, Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar insisted on immediate implementation of 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) alongside the UCC. Congress MLA Arif Masood alleged that Parliamentary norms were violated by the State Government. The only objective of the State Government was simply to get it passed.

 

The Constitution is no longer being upheld, he added. After passage of the Bill, Chief Minister MohanYadav called the Bill’s passage a ‘golden day’ saying “the passing of the Uniform Civil Code Bill is truly a golden day for the 8.5 crore people of the State. This move will liberate women from the suffering caused by polygamy.” CM said, “The enactment of this law in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly demonstrates our genuine commitment to the vision of ‘One Nation, One Constitution, One Flag, One Leader,’ championed by Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee.This move will liberate women from the suffering caused by polygamy and ensure Government support for their rights. While interacting with media in Assembly premises, Chief Minister accused Congress party and said “why do they always seek to create a divide between Hindus and Muslims?” Experts say, the contentious UCC Bill, which was passed by the State Legislative Assembly, will now be sent to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and come into effect after her assent. With this, MP will became the fifth State to implement the UCC in the country.
