Nagpur district has emerged as Maharashtra's leading district in the expansion of AYUSH-based primary healthcare, with the highest number of 40 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) established under the National AYUSH Mission (NAM) during the last three years.

 

The figures were tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Monday by Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH in a written reply. According to the Ministry, 394 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and four Integrated AYUSH Hospitals have been established across Maharashtra under the National AYUSH Mission based on proposals submitted by the State Government. Nagpur accounted for the highest number of AAMs in the State, followed by Amravati (29), Buldhana (27), Bhandara (25), Gondia (23) and Chandrapur (21), indicating a significant focus on strengthening AYUSH services in the Vidarbha region. Akola has 20 AAMs, while Gadchiroli has 14, Wardha 13, Yavatmal 12 and Washim six.

 

The Ministry informed Parliament that the National AYUSH Mission in Maharashtra was evaluated by NITI Aayog in 2025 as part of an assessment covering seven centrally sponsored health schemes. The reply further stated that the Centre has released Rs 153.80 crore as its share under the National AYUSH Mission between 2014-15 and 2025-26 for the promotion and development of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy in Maharashtra. Against this, the State Government has reported an expenditure of Rs 135.35 crore. The Centre also informed that Maharashtra has integrated AYUSH services with primary healthcare by operationalising Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, co-locating AYUSH facilities in district hospitals, sub-district hospitals, community health centres and primary health centres, deploying AYUSH medical officers and ensuring the supply of AYUSH medicines, particularly in rural and tribal areas.
