A SECTION of the false ceiling in the new Chhattisgarh Assembly building collapsed on Wednesday, raising concerns over the quality of construction and safety standards at the multi-crore government complex. The incident has prompted calls for a technical investigation and an independent assessment of the building’s construction quality. According to officials, the collapse occurred in an officer’s room adjacent to the main Assembly chamber, where the false ceiling, along with steel pipes and supporting frames, fell.

 

No injuries were reported as the room was unoccupied at the time of the incident. Repair work in the affected area has since begun. Experts note that public buildings are generally required to undergo prescribed inspections, testing, and certification before being put to use. In light of the ceiling collapse and the reported absence of the Utilisation Certificate, demands have intensified for a detailed technical inquiry to assess the structural safety and overall construction quality of the Assembly building.
