COMMEMORATING the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Headquarters Madhya Bharat Area solemnly honoured the unparalleled courage, valour and supreme sacrifice of the brave soldiers of Indian Armed Forces who laid down their lives for the Nation during the Kargil War (Operation Vijay) in 1999. Observed every year on July 26, Kargil Vijay Diwas marks the successful culmination of Operation Vijay, through which the Indian Armed Forces recaptured the strategic heights in the Kargil–Drass–Batalik Sector of Ladakh that had been illegally occupied by Pakistani Armed Forces. Fighting at altitudes of above 16,000 feet under extremely harsh weather conditions and on treacherous snow-clad mountain peaks, the soldiers of Indian Armed Forces displayed extraordinary courage, unwavering determination and exceptional professionalism, ultimately defeating the enemy’s nefarious designs. The victory came at a heavy cost, with 527 brave soldiers making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, while 1,363 personnel were wounded during the conflict. To commemorate this historic victory and pay tribute to the immortal heroes of the Kargil War, Lieutenant General Harbinder Singh Vandra, General Officer Commanding, Madhya Bharat Area, Collector, Raghvendra Singh, IAS, SP, Sampat Upadhyay, IPS alongwith senior military officers, veterans, Veer Naris, serving personnel, civil dignitaries and their families, laid wreaths at the Station War Memorial at Headquarters Madhya Bharat Area, Jabalpur.

 

The solemn ceremony commenced with the sounding of the Last Post, followed by a two-minute silence in honour of the fallen heroes. Wreaths were laid as a mark of deep respect and gratitude and the names of the martyrs were remembered with pride. The ceremony reflected the enduring spirit of patriotism, duty and selfless service that continues to inspire generations of Indians. Speaking on the occasion, the General Officer Commanding paid rich tributes to the heroes of the Kargil War and reaffirmed the Indian Army's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Nation. He stated that the courage and sacrifice of the Kargil martyrs would forever remain a beacon of inspiration for every soldier and every citizen of India. The observance of Kargil Vijay Diwas serves as a reminder of the extraordinary bravery, resilience and indomitable spirit of the Indian Armed Forces. It reinforces the Nation's eternal gratitude to its brave soldiers whose selfless devotion to duty ensured the safety, honour and security of the country.
