THE 17th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) is set to spotlight the depth, sensitivity, and artistic excellence of Marathi cinema with a remarkable line-up of feature and short films. This year's selection at IFFM once again reinforces the industry's reputation as one of India's most compelling cinematic voices. Leading the Marathi showcase is Baapya (The Man), starring acclaimed actor Rajshri Deshpande, known for her powerful performances in both Indian and international projects. The film promises an emotionally charged narrative that explores human relationships, identity, and the complexities of contemporary society, continuing the tradition of Marathi cinema's fearless approach to meaningful storytelling. The short film Between Cradles explores the emotional journey between generations, while Bramhakamal (T he Queen of the Night) presents a poetic narrative inspired by themes of beauty, hope, and transformation. Ghamela offers a grounded story that reflects the realities of everyday life,capturing the resilience and dignity of ordinary people. Adding to the rich line-up is Last Night I Dreamed it was Raining Fish, an imaginative and visually engaging short that blends emotion with striking storytelling. Maaybaapache Aashirwaad (Blessings) explores the enduring bond between family and tradition, celebrating the values that continue to shape lives across generations. The programme also includes Photosensitive, a contemporary narrative that examines human emotions through a unique cinematic lens, while Smriti (Memoria) reflects on memory, loss, and the passage of time with quiet sensitivity. Completing the Marathi showcase is TheVoice of Old, a poignant film that celebrates wisdom, lived experiences, and the voices of an older generation that often remain unheard.
