CHHATTISGARH'Sproposal for the creation of a dedicated "Bastar Regiment" in the Indian Army has brought renewed focus on the contribution of tribal youth from the conflict-affected Bastar region to the c o u n t r y ' s internal security. Citing their e x c e p t i o n a l courage in anti-Naxal operations and extensive knowledge of the region's rugged terrain, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma has urged the Centre to constitute a regiment that would recognise their service while creating greater opportunities for local youth to join the armed forces. In a letter dated June 26 to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Sharma said personnel from the tribal-dominated Bastar division have consistently displayed bravery in anti-Naxal operations and developed cons i d e r a b l e expertise in guerrilla warfare under challenging conditions. He said a Bastar Regiment would be a fitting recognition of their contribution to national security and would encourage more youth from the region to serve the nation.

 

Sharma said the proposed regiment would not only strengthen the country's security architecture but also contribute to Bastar's socio-economic development by promoting discipline, national integration and a sense of pride among the region's youth. He added that the initiative would generate employment opportunities and help foster long-term peace and stability in the region. Responding to Sharma's request, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh acknowledged receipt of the letter and informed him that the proposal is under examination. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai welcomed the development, saying the proposal had been placed before the Centre and expressing hope that it would benefit the people of Bastar. "It will be beneficial as local people will get employment," Sai said. The proposal has come amid sustained efforts by the Centre and the State government to accelerate development in Bastar.
