The torrential rains on Tuesday in city triggered panic among citizens and recalled the catastrophic September 23, 2023 flash floods that wreaked havoc among people of Nagpur. In 2023, city witnessed 110 mm of rainfall in just four hours which caused flash flood. However, on Tuesday city witnessed 104.5 mm of rainfall in just three hours and throughout the day Nagpur received 180 mm rainfall which was more rains as compare to the 2023 rains. With 180 mm of rains in just 24 hours, city witnessed the fifth highest rains in a single day in July. As per the data shared by the weather department, the highest 24 hours rains in July in city took place in 1994 with 304 mm rains. Second highest rains took place in 2018 with 282 mm rains.

 

The third highest happened in 2025 with 202.4 mm rains and the fourth highest was 183 mm that took place in 1991. Weather department issued ‘Red Alert’ for Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Gondia districts on July 29. The department continued the ‘Red Alert’ for Chandrapur for July 30 as well. There is an ‘Orange Alert’ for Nagpur, Amravati, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Gondia and Wardha for July 29 and 30. The weather department appealed citizens to be vigilant for the next three days as it predicted heavy to very heavy rains in Nagpur. On Tuesday, Bhandara (30 mm), Gadchiroli (17 mm), Bramhapuri (13 mm), Chandrapur (11 mm), Wardha (8 mm), Akola (6 mm), Yavatmal (6 mm), Gondia (4 mm), Amravati (3 mm) and Buldhana (1 mm) also received rains.

 

 

Nagpur city is witnessing single-day extreme rains from last four years indicating the impact of climate change in the region. In 2023, city witnessed 164 mm of single-day rains which was took place on July 27. In 2024, the single day highest rains was happened on July 21 with 164 mm. In 2025, city witnessed 202.4 mm of single day highest rains that took place on July 9. Tuesday’s 180 mm rains was the fourth year extreme rain in a row. Despite El Nino impact in the region, such a high downpour in just 24 hours is a sheer impact of climate change.

 

 

South West Nagpur, which is the constituency of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, witnessed the highest incidents water logging on Tuesday as majority of main and inner roads of the constituency were water-logged after the rains. Khamla Square, Padole Square, Trimurty Nagar, Pratap Nagar, Jaitala, London Street etc. were submerged into water caused severe trouble for commuters who remained stuck on roads for 3-4 hours. The water - logging caused severe traffic jam.
