Gadkari pushes project to ease Gandhibagh congestion
Nagpur is set to get a modern textile market on Subhash Road, a project expected to transform the city’s wholesale cloth trade and reduce congestion in the busy Gandhibagh cloth market. During a review meeting on Saturday, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari directed officials to speed up the proposal and stated that the new market would offer modern facilities and a wide range of textile businesses and it would make shopping easier for traders and customers visiting the city from across the region.
Chairing a high-level review meeting at his Mahal residence, Gadkari directed officials to speed up ongoing projects and prepare time-bound plans for completing key infrastructure works. He stressed the need to build state-of-the-art commercial complexes, stadiums and public facilities in view of Nagpur’s rapid growth.
One of the biggest announcements was the proposal to develop a modern textile market on a MHADA-owned plot on Subhash Road. The market is expected to become a one-stop destination for textile traders and shoppers which would reduce congestion in the busy Gandhibagh market and offer better facilities for customers arriving from outside Nagpur.
To strengthen the city’s commercial infrastructure, plans were also reviewed for redeveloping Cotton Market, Orange Market, Netaji Market, Itwari Bazaar, Dahi Bazaar, Kamal Talkies Square Market, Shaniwar Market, Budhwar Market in Sakkardara and the Dik Dispensary site in Dharampeth. These projects are expected to improve market facilities and generate additional revenue for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. The meeting also discussed redevelopment of Mor Bhavan and Ganeshpeth bus stations, Yashwant Stadium, Chitnis Park, Pardi Market, police stations and housing projects. Gadkari directed officials to remove encroachments on NMC and NIT land after proper mapping and ensure rehabilitation of eligible residents. Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar, Mayor Neeta Thakre, Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare, Leader of Ruling Party Narendra Borkar, and other municipal officials were present during the meeting.
