A multi-storey building collapsed in Bada Phuhara, one of the busiest market areas of the city, around 8 pm on Tuesday. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported as the market remained closed for the day. According to preliminary information, the old structure belonged to Raja Jain. The building comprised three to four interconnected houses. Several shops were operating on the ground floor on rent. The building suddenly caved in and triggering panic among nearby residents and shopkeepers.

People rushed out of their shops and gathered at the spot after hearing the loud crash. Soon after receiving information, senior officials and teams from the District Administration, Municipal Corporation, police and other concerned departments reached the site. The area was cordoned off and rescue and inspection work was initiated. Officials said the market being closed on Tuesday helped avert a major tragedy, as the area usually witnesses heavy footfall during business hours. The exact cause of the collapse is yet to be ascertained. Further probe is underway.
