Bhopal airport loses 5

Administrative efforts to connect Bhopal Raja Bhoj Airport with major metropolitan cities and attract new airlines are struggling to yield ground-level results. Despite optimistic long-term plans presented by airport management, flight connectivity from the capital city is actively shrinking instead of expanding. Official data reveals a sharp decline in daily flight operations and passenger movement over the last six months, raising concerns among regular travellers and aviation experts. Daily flight operations shrink from eighteen to thirteen: Aviation analysts have expressed concern over the declining numbers at Raja Bhoj Airport, which operated eighteen flights daily just six months ago but has now seen that figure reduce to a mere thirteen. This significant reduction in scheduled flights has severely restricted direct connectivity from Bhopal, forcing passengers who prioritise time-saving air travel to look for alternative hubs or face highly inconvenient transit schedules. Daily passenger footfall drops below season low of 3500: The drop in flight availability has directly impacted passenger traffic, causing daily footfall to slide from an average of five thousand passengers to between thirty-five hundred and forty-five hundred. The first few days of July registered some of the lowest traffic figures of the season, with only three thousand four hundred and two passengers recorded on July 1, followed by a slight increase to three thousand six hundred and two passengers on July 2. Hopeful May surge collapses into significant June slump: The airport experienced a highly promising surge in May when total monthly passenger volume reached nearly Rs 1.5 lakh, raising expectations that daily flight movements might soon scale up to fifty flights.

However, this momentum broke in June as passenger numbers fell to 1,33,756 comprising 67,288 arriving passengers and 66466 departing travellers. IndiGo monopoly tightens as Air India operations fade: IndiGo currently holds a near-monopoly on Bhopal air routes, operating eleven of the thirteen daily flights to connect the city with Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Raipur and Noida. In contrast, national carrier Air India has scaled down its local presence, completely cancelling its Mumbai service and leaving only two daily flights to Delhi active. Lack of competition keeps airfares high for local commuters: Aviation experts emphasise that airfares will remain high and flight choices limited until other commercial airlines enter the Bhopal market to challenge the existing monopoly. The current lack of competition forces passengers to purchase expensive tickets for key sectors, prompting airport officials to hold ongoing discussions with multiple carriers to bring new flight options to Raja Bhoj Airport. Bhopal Airport Director Alok Tripathi stated that while Air India currently operates only two flights to Delhi and has discontinued its Mumbai operations, intense efforts are underway to introduce Air India Express flights. Tripathi confirmed that the technical team of Air India Express has inspected the airport facilities and provided assurances that they may launch flight services from Bhopal in August, which would significantly improve regional connectivity.
