The Nagpur Zilla Parishad has approved the construction of 115 more model Anganwadi centres after completing the first phase of ‘Mission Super 40’, under which 40 Anganwadis were either newly constructed or upgraded into child-friendly early learning centres across the district. Launched last year under the leadership of Vinayak Mahamuni, Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Parishad Nagpur, the initiative sought to create model anganwadis that would attract children and provide a stimulating learning environment.

 

The completed 570 sq ft centres are equipped with toilets, washbasins, spacious activity areas and colourful interiors designed to encourage children to attend, play and learn. The centres have been developed using the Building as a Learning Aid (BALA) concept, in which the building itself becomes an educational resource. Windows fitted with movable beads function like an abacus, while walls and other structural elements feature interactive learning aids, allowing children to learn through play and everyday activities.

 

While the Government normally provides Rs 11.25 lakh for constructing an anganwadi building, the district converged funds from the District Planning Committee (DPC), Zilla Parishad cess and the 15th Finance Commission, increasing the allocation to around Rs 16-17 lakh per centre. Officials said the newly completed model Anganwadis have generated considerable interest, with several villages requesting similar facilities in their areas. Encouraged by this response, the Zilla Parishad has decided to construct 115 more model anganwadis to strengthen early childhood education infrastructure and provide young children with safe, attractive and activity-based learning spaces across the district.
