AIIMS Bhopal doctors have developed an indigenous medical device to make wisdom tooth removal easier, which has received a patent from the Government of India. Wisdom tooth removal is one of the most common dental surgeries, but it is not always simple. Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25. In many people, there is not enough space in the jaw for these teeth to emerge properly. As a result, the tooth may remain trapped inside the gums or jawbone, making surgical removal necessary. If the tooth is deeply impacted or develops at an unusual angle, surgeons may need to remove some of the surrounding bone. In some cases, the tooth must also be cut into smaller pieces before removal, making the surgery more difficult. Addressing this problem, the device has been designed to make such difficult surgeries easier.

 

The instrument reduces the amount of bone that needs to be cut during surgery in selected cases. Furthermore, it is extremely helpful for patients who have limited mouth opening or have undergone treatment for oral cancer, as reaching the wisdom tooth is difficult in such patients. The prototype of this device is currently being used during surgeries, resulting in patients experiencing less pain, reduced swelling, and lower expenses on medicines after surgery, making their recovery much more comfortable. This achievement was accomplished by a team consisting of Maxillofacial Surgeons Dr Anshul Rai, Dr B L Soni, and former Senior Residents Dr Jitendra and Dr Sammridhi, after nearly five years of research, clinical experience, and technical development. Following further technical testing, verification, and necessary approvals, this technology could make wisdom tooth surgery more effective for dentists and patients in India and around the world.
