Freedom was never free

Every year, on the August 15th, the skies bloom with colors of the tricolour. Children sing the National Anthem. Speeches echo across schools and public grounds. Social media is filled with patriotic messages. But then comes the question that should shake every conscience:Do we truly deserve the freedom we celebrate? Our independence was not gifted. It was carved out of sacrifice, soaked in the blood of countless brave men and women who chose the nation over their own lives. They faced bullets without fear. They left behind families, dreams, and futures so that generations they would never meet could breathe in a free India. They never asked, “What will I get from my country?" They asked, "What can I give to my country?” Today, the battlefield has changed.

The enemy is not always at the border. Sometimes it lives within us, in corruption, dishonesty, hatred, selfishness, ignorance, and silence when injustice unfolds before our eyes. The greatest tribute to our martyrs is not merely waving the flag for one day. It is protecting the values for which they sacrificed everything. To the youth of India: Nation does not need empty slogans. It needs fearless integrity, needs young minds that refuse to cheat, needs hands that build instead of destroy, needs voices that unite instead of divide, needs citizens who stand for truth even when standing alone is difficult. Patriotism is not measured by the volume of our words but by the character of our actions if the time ever demands sacrifice, let your courage be unwavering. But until that day, let your loyalty be visible in your honesty, compassion and commitment to making India stronger every single day.

Remember tricolour is not just a piece of cloth, it carries the dreams of millions, the tears of mothers who never saw their sons return, the courage of soldiers who still stand guard while we sleep peacefully, and the hope that every generation will leave India better than they found it. And before we salute the Tricolour, let us ask ourselves one final question: What is the value of our freedom if someone weaker than us still lives in fear? A nation cannot call itself truly free if its senior citizens are abandoned, its women are unsafe, its children are exploited, its animals are abused, and the vulnerable are denied dignity so let our patriotism be measured not only by the flag we raise, but by the lives we protect.
