A man wanted in a cheating case in Yavatmal district died after consuming rat poison while police were picking him up from a petrol pump in Nagpur on Monday evening. The deceased has been identified as Anand Bhagat (30). He was wanted by the Kalamb police in connection with a cheating case of around Rs 5 lakh. According to police, Bhagat was working as a Manager at a petrol pump when he allegedly committed the fraud. The Kalamb police had been searching for him after registering the case.

 

On Monday, the police received information that Bhagat was in Nagpur. A police team traced him to a petrol pump in the Hudkeshwar Police Station area. The team reached the petrol pump at around 6.30 pm and picked him up. Police said Bhagat consumed something soon after he was taken into custody. When questioned, he reportedly told the officers that he was chewing gutkha. However, the police became suspicious when foam started coming out of his mouth after some time. “He initially told us that he had consumed gutkha.

 

However, after we noticed foam coming from his mouth, we realised that he might have consumed some poisonous substance,” a police officer said. The officers then questioned him further and learnt that he had allegedly consumed rat poison. The police team, led by a PSI, immediately took Bhagat to the Hudkeshwar Police Station. The incident was recorded in the station diary as per procedure. His condition, however, deteriorated. The police rushed him to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur for treatment. However, Bhagat died during treatment. Police officials said further investigation was being carried out to establish the exact sequence of events and circumstances surrounding his death. The Kalamb police were informed about the death. Further legal proceedings will be conducted as per the procedure.
