NAGPUR fencer Shruti Dharmendra Joshi won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship, underway in Lagos, Nigeria, on Monday. Team India captured four gold, five silver, and 11 bronze medals after the opening day. Participating in the senior women’s sabre team event, 22-year-old fourth seed Shruti defeated Johnston Caitlin of Northern Ireland 15-2 in the Round of 16.

 

In the quarters, Shruti got over compatriot Shreya Gupta 15-11 by a close margin. Shruti went down to eventual winner England’s Bethany Brierley 15-12 in the next round. The silver was taken by Aakhri Sharma, while Jefarlin JS and Shruti claimed the bronze medal. She finished fifth in Under23 singles sabre event.
