HIGH tension prevailed in front of the main administrative building of Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya (RDVV) following a physical altercation between student leaders belonging to the MPSU and university employees on Thursday. The violent clash resulted in the cancellation of the university’s scheduled Tiranga Yatra and led top administrative officials to lodge a formal police complaint. The conflict unfolded at the venue where the RDVV Employees’ Union (Karmachari Sangh) was conducting a serial hunger strike. Union President Sanjay Yadav had invited representatives of the MPSU student organisation to join the demonstration. Simultaneously, the university administration had designated the same location for the commencement of its Tiranga Yatra. Tensions escalated when student leaders publicly demanded the resignation of ViceChancellor Professor Verma on moral grounds. The demonstrators cited pending court cases concerning his academic credentials and alleged inappropriate behavior toward a female university official. According to eyewitnesses, as students were chanting slogans against the administration, Professor Verma arrived at the protest site accompanied by five to six close associates from the university staff. Shortly thereafter, staff members and supporters accompanying the ViceChancellor reportedly engaged in a physical assault on the protesting students. The demonstration was the result of recent developments in Jharkhand, where thousands of job aspirants and student activists were marching toward the Legislative Assembly to present demands regarding alleged recruitment discrepancies in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) examinations. Security personnel intercepted the march using lathicharge, tear gas shells and water cannons, leaving several activists injured and provoking widespread outrage. Addressing the gathering in Jabalpur, ABVP State Secretary Subrat Bajhal stated that students were exercising their democratic rights to demand fairness in state examinations. He noted that the violent police action against peaceful marchers has deeply angered the academic community across the country. ABVP City Secretary Aryan Punj criticized the local administration's reliance on force, asserting that suppressing student grievances with batons and tear gas violates core democratic norms. He stated that democratic governance requires open dialogue rather than administrative repression when dealing with public demands. They demanded for a transparent examination process, accountability in recruitment commissions and protection of democratic protesting rights and condemned police action against students in Jharkhand and demands for academic reform. ABVP declared full solidarity with the student movement in Jharkhand and warned of expanded, nationwide democratic agitations if student rights continue to be suppressed. The demonstration concluded with participating activists taking a formal pledge to continue advocating for transparent recruitment systems and student welfare nationwide.
