I no longer count my blessings
only on the days the sun is kind.
Some mornings arrive with heavy skies,
unanswered prayers,
and a heart that forgets how to hope.
I'll admit it's a fall that we think of first
But what about the sun
That has risen at coast?
Yet even then, there is a breath
That asks for nothing in return,
Has no expectations from me
Life sometimes sets me free
A sky that waits for me to look up,
Hands that have carried me farther
Than I ever thanked them for,
And people whose quiet presence
Became home before I realised it.
Gratitude, I have learned,
Isn't pretending that pain does’'t exist.
It is choosing to notice
The tiny lights that refuse to go out.
The warmth of tea, a familiar voice.
A page waiting to be written,
A tomorrow that still believes in me,
A thought that still says you’ve got it.
You shine, you rise, you be nice.
So today, I won’t thank life only for what it gave
I’ll also thank it for what it took away,
For the lessons that arrived disguised as storms,
And for every version of me that had to break
So the real me could bloom.
It took time but no,
here I am!
With hope that
whatever may,
I’ll stand.
Perhaps gratitude isn't a grand speech
to the universe.
Perhaps it is simply
whispering
“Thank you for
one more day”.
