13 gates of Bargi Dam openedDownstream Narmada rises by10 ft flooding surrounding areas
Staff Reporter :
CONTINUOUS heavy rainfall in
the Bargi Dam catchment has
sharply increased inflow into the
reservoir, forcing the dam management to open 13 gates. The
gates have been opened to an
average height of 2.15 metres,
releasing 3,988 cumecs of water
every second into the Narmada.
The reservoir level rose rapidly from 421.25 metres to 421.35
metres within a few hours. Earlier,
water was being released through
nine gates, but the discharge was
increased after continuous inflow
from the upper catchment.
The sudden release has already
raised the Narmada water level
by 8 to 10 feet in downstream
areas. Water reached the upper
steps of several ghats, while the
river flowed with a strong current. Authorities said four more
gates could be opened if inflow
continues at the present rate.
The famous Dhuandhar
Waterfall at Bhedaghat has also
changed its appearance.
The
increased discharge has turned
the waterfall into a powerful
and roaring flow, with fast-flowing water covering the surrounding river channel.
The Bargi Dam management
has appealed to devotees,
tourists, boat operators and residents to stay away from riverbanks, ghats and low-lying areas.
Police and disaster management
teams are on high alert and vulnerable villages are being monitored continuously.
The weather department has
forecast more rainfall across
the region during the next few
days. Officials have advised
people not to enter the
Narmada for photography,
bathing or boating until the
water level becomes normal.
