AN 86-YEAR-OLD man from Chunabhatti was allegedly cheated of more than Rs 12.08 lakh by cyber fraudsters, with the case raising questions over the security of his bank account. Police have registered a case against unidentified persons and are also examining the possible role of bank employees. According to police, the elderly man came across a link on Facebook offering senior citizen cards and benefits for retired people. After clicking the link, he was allegedly contacted by a person who asked him to open WhatsApp and provide details including his Aadhaar, PAN card and ATM information. The caller later conducted a video call to obtain additional details and claimed that the card would be delivered to his home. No one, however, arrived to deliver the card. Around the same time, a female bank employee visited the man’s home and helped him open a fixed deposit of Rs 6 lakh. During their conversation, he told her about the senior citizen card call. The employee allegedly warned him that such calls were fraudulent. She left after completing the FD formalities, saying she would deliver the documents later. BANK ALERTS FAMILY AFTER TWO DAYS: The next day, the man’s driver went to the bank to collect the FD documents but was not given them.
 
Two days later, the bank contacted the man’s son-in-law and informed him that the FD had been broken and money had been withdrawn from the account. On checking the account statement, the family found that more than Rs 12.08 lakh had been withdrawn. PHONE SUSPECTED TO BE HACKED:Police suspect that the man’s mobile phone had been compromised when the transactions took place, preventing him from receiving bank alerts. Investigators are examining the transactions and the possible involvement of bank employees. Rs 81,000 withdrawn without OTP IN ANOTHER case, Koh-e-Fiza police registered a fraud case after Rs 81,000 was allegedly withdrawn from a 53-year-old man’s bank account without an OTP. The complainant said he had not opened any suspicious link or shared an OTP. The elderly man later discovered the withdrawal while attempting to make a UPI payment on August 5. BTech student loses Rs 40,000 A 19-YEAR-OLD BTech student from Indrapuri also reported an unauthorised withdrawal of Rs 40,000 from his bank account on August 14. Piplani police have registered a case on his complaint and started an investigation into the transaction.
