AN 86-YEAR-OLD man from
Chunabhatti was allegedly cheated of more than Rs 12.08 lakh by
cyber fraudsters, with the case
raising questions over the security of his bank account. Police
have registered a case against
unidentified persons and are also
examining the possible role of
bank employees.
According to police, the elderly man came across a link on
Facebook offering senior citizen cards and benefits for
retired people. After clicking
the link, he was allegedly contacted by a person who asked
him to open WhatsApp and provide details including his
Aadhaar, PAN card and ATM
information. The caller later
conducted a video call to obtain
additional details and claimed
that the card would be delivered to his home. No one, however, arrived to deliver the card.
Around the same time, a
female bank employee visited
the man’s home and helped him
open a fixed deposit of Rs 6 lakh.
During their conversation, he
told her about the senior citizen
card call. The employee allegedly warned him that such calls
were fraudulent. She left after
completing the FD formalities,
saying she would deliver the documents later.
BANK ALERTS FAMILY AFTER
TWO DAYS: The next day, the
man’s driver went to the bank to
collect the FD documents but
was not given them.
Two days later, the bank contacted the man’s
son-in-law and informed him
that the FD had been broken and
money had been withdrawn from
the account. On checking the
account statement, the family
found that more than Rs 12.08
lakh had been withdrawn.
PHONE SUSPECTED TO BE
HACKED:Police suspect that the
man’s mobile phone had been
compromised when the transactions took place, preventing
him from receiving bank alerts.
Investigators are examining the
transactions and the possible
involvement of bank employees.
