Staff Reporter :
City’s historic Ambazari Lake, once a vital water source and a cherished landmark, is set for a significant transformation. During a visit to this iconic waterbody on Thursday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis applauded the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) for commendable efforts in reviving the lake.
For years, the lake struggled under the menace of water hyacinth (Eichhornia), which threatened its ecosystem and hindered recreational activities. NMC launched a dedicated campaign and succeeded in removing the invasive growth and restoring the lake’s beauty.
Appreciating the results, the Chief Minister enjoyed a boat ride and felicitated the local officials and teams behind the successful cleanup campaign.
Highlight of Chief Minister’s visit was his strong commitment to the lake’s future. Fadnavis explicitly announced that the State Government would provide necessary funding to
redevelop Ambazari Lake into a premier tourist destination. Recognising its historical and cultural significance to Nagpur, he emphasised that the State Government is fully prepared to provide financial backing required to enhance the area’s infrastructure and appeal.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of this project, the Chief Minister outlined plans to address pollution. A new Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in the nearby Wadi Municipal Council will soon be operational, ensuring that only treated, clean water flows into the lake, thereby preventing return of water hyacinth.
Furthermore, the CM expressed his vision for introducing water sports, including kayaking, to boost tourism.
Mayor Neeta Thakre appreciated the efforts saying everyone has made a concerted effort to remove the weed from the lake. The local corporator and the municipal administration tried to remove water hyacinth regularly. Mayor Thakre said that due to this, the glory of the lake has been restored today. During the visit, Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibed, Chairman of the Standing Committee Shivani Dani-Wakhare, Ruling Party Leader Narendra (Balya) Borkar, Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar, former Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari, zonal chairpersons and other civic officials were present.
By restoring its historical grandeur and investing in modern facilities with state support, the Government aims to return Ambazari Lake to its original glory. This initiative not only protects city’s natural heritage but also promises to create a vibrant recreational hub for residents and visitors alike.
‘The Hitavada’ has been consistently raising the issue
of dying conditions of lakes across the city. The campaign
aimed at reminding citizens and especially the civic body
about their duties towards conservation and restoration of lakes. For years, city’s most iconic lake, Ambazari lake had been filled with Eichhornia, troubling citizens, reducing tourism and visitors’ footfall. Now, the lake is clear from water hyacinth and assurance from the State Government regarding its re-development has revived hopes.
