Devendra Fadnavis inspects devpt works at GMCH, Mayo Hospital

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday inspected various ongoing development works and medical facilities at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) in Nagpur, and warned officials that poor construction quality would not be tolerated. Fadnavis expressed dissatisfaction over the quality and slow pace of some projects and issued a strong warning that structures would even be demolished and rebuilt if quality standards were compromised.

During his previous visit to GMCH, the Chief Minister had flagged the poor quality of ward renovation works and the slow progress of the cancer hospital project. During Thursday’s inspection, he acknowledged some improvement in the pace of work but made it clear that delays would not be tolerated. At IGGMCH, Fadnavis expressed concern over slow progress of 500-bed Medicine Block. He observed that prolonged construction at a slow pace could affect the quality of work. In a healthcare facility, he said, compromises on quality could have a direct bearing on patients’ lives and therefore could not be accepted. The Chief Minister warned officials that if any compromise with construction quality was detected, he would not hesitate to order demolition of even newly constructed or partially completed structures and have them rebuilt. The State Government has sanctioned substantial funds for development works at the two major Government hospitals in Nagpur. Fadnavis reviewed progress of these projects and facilities being developed for patients and their relatives, besides advanced medical infrastructure.

At GMCH, the Chief Minister visited NIC and PICU and inaugurated the ventilator unit at PICU. He also inspected the operation theatre and Surgical ICU and directed officials to ensure that all works were completed with the required quality standards. Fadnavis also met tribal schoolgirl from Japtalai in Dhanora taluka of Gadchiroli district, who is undergoing treatment at GMCH following a snake-bite incident at a tribal residential school. He interacted with her mother, enquired about the girl’s condition and directed doctors to provide proper and continuous medical care. Vice Dean Dr Devendra Mahore, Medical Superintendent Dr Avinash Gawande, MLA Mohan Mate, District Collector Kumar Ashirwad, NMC Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar and corporator Ritesh Gawande were present.
