Lack of monsoon rains in August is causing severe rainfall deficit in whole Vidarbha while raising threat for agriculture sector in coming days. In August, so far, Vidarbha is reeling under 68 per cent of monsoon backlog, whereas the seasonal deficit is 21 per cent. In this month, Vidarbha region received only 67.4 mm of actual rains against 210.4 mm of normal. In Vidarbha, Wardha is the worst affected district with 89 per cent of rain deficit followed by Amravati (-87 per cent), Akola (-85 per cent), Nagpur (-84 per cent), Yavatmal (-81 per cent), Chandrapur (-75 per cent), Washim (-63 per cent), Gadchiroli (-57 per cent), Bhandara (-55 per cent), Huge rainfall deficit in August in Vid Buldhana (-47 per cent), and Gondia (-25 per cent). from June 1 to August 21, Amravati is the worst affected district in the region with 33 per cent of monsoon rain deficit. Chandrapur is second worst affected with 31 per cent deficit. With -29 per cent, Nagpur is third most affected district in Vidarbha. On Friday, Nagpur received light showers which helped to cool down the temperature in evening. India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted light showers in coming days but there is no major changes will take place in the region. “Due to a cyclonic circulation the local rains took place in city on Friday and light to moderate rains may take place in next two-three days in Vidarbha but it will be patchy,” said Dr Praveen Kumar, Scientist C, Regional Meteorological Centre, Nagpur to ‘The Hitavada’.
