While the Government is spending crores of rupees to build new roads everyday, the apathy towards maintaining existing roads is making conditions worse. The stretch between 8th Mile and Wadi Police Station on the busy Amravati road has emerged as another example. The stretch of road has turned into a perilous obstacle course for commuters due to poor maintenance. Deep craters and uneven patches has degraded the national highway stretch and has made it dangerous to drive. It poses a severe safety hazard for thousands of daily office-goers, commercial vehicle riders, school children, and locals navigating the corridor. Being one of the most important entry points to the city, the road is heavily used by two-wheeler riders, heavy vehicles and private taxis.

 

The commuters face constant risk of skidding as the road has loose gravel and dirt, while deep potholes force commuters to change lanes unpredictably risking countless lives. The poor condition of road also causes severe bumper-to-bumper traffic jams during peak hours. P Mohan, President of the MIDC Industries Association, says, “Industrialists, employees, and workers are facing hardships due to poor condition of the road. It poses a big threat to lives of commuters, as many heavy vehicles regularly ply on the road.” Prolonged exposure to the jarring ride has caused commuters complain of chronic back and spine issues, alongside vehicular wear and tear.
