GMR to strengthen Bird Control at Nagpur Airport with state-of-the-art WHM system

Bird-strike prevention at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is set
to receive a further boost with GMR taking over the management of the airport’s Bird Control Unit soon.
The airport, which was initially developed as part of the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport (MIHAN) at Nagpur, has been focusing on strengthening Airport Wildlife Hazard Management (WHM) to minimise the risk posed by birds and other wildlife to aircraft operations.
The Airport WHM team maintains continuous surveillance of the airside and runway environment through dedicated patrolling, wildlife monitoring, habitat control and immediate bird-dispersal measures.
A combination of pyrotechnics, visual deterrents and acoustic deterrents is deployed depending on the nature and intensity of bird activity.
Resources are also positioned based on risk assessment so that bird activity remains well
below acceptable operational thresholds, particularly
around runways and other critical areas.
However, the challenge is not restricted to the airport boundary. Environmental conditions in the surrounding areas can significantly influence bird movement. Landfills, agricultural fields, open drains, water bodies, unmanaged vegetation and other locations offering food, water or shelter can attract large numbers of birds.
Such congregations can increase the possibility of birds entering flight paths, particularly during take-off and landing.
The airport therefore monitors potential wildlife attractants in its influence area and coordinates with local authorities and other stakeholders to address sources that encourage bird congregation.
Habitat management and regular surveillance are important components of this effort.
Under the new GMR management framework, the airport is expected to move towards a more technology-driven approach toWHM. Survey-based wildlife studies will help identify bird species, movement patterns and areas of recurring activity.
Analytics and GIS-enabled hotspot mapping will provide a clearer picture of locations where bird activity is concentrated, allowing preventive measures to be deployed more effectively.
Advanced bird detection and tracking systems, predictive risk assessment and digital dashboards are also expected to strengthen real-time monitoring and decision-making.
Instead of relying only on reactive bird-dispersal measures, the system will enable the team to identify patterns and anticipate potential risks.
The integration of technology with enhanced habitat
management and data-driven decision-making is expected to make bird control more
proactive.
With GMR’s experience and practices followed across its airports, the WHM system at Nagpur is poised for further strengthening, with the
primary objective of keeping bird-strike risks under control and ensuring safer aircraft
operations.
