In a major food safety crackdown, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in a joint operation with Nagpur Police, seized 55,996 kg of roasted supari worth Rs 2,23,98,400 from Gaurish Agro Private Limited in Kalamna, on suspicion that the stock was substandard. The massive stock was taken into custody on August 21 after the FDA raised doubts about its quality. Officials are examining the quality of the roasted supari, its storage conditions and compliance with the relevant provisions of food safety laws. Details of the seized stock are being recorded, with further legal action to be decided after the examination is completed.

 

The seizure is among the major food safety actions undertaken in the city recently, given both the quantity and value of the stock involved. However, the action remains subject to the outcome of the FDA’s examination, and the stock should not be described as illegal or unfit for consumption until the inquiry establishes any violation. The action was taken under the guidance of Krishna Jaipurkar, Joint Commissioner, FDA, Nagpur Division and Nagpur Police.
