AKSHAY Ravindra Nawale, a deaf and mute swimmer of Shark Aquatics Sporting Association, trained by city’s noted coach Sanjay Batwe, turned a life saver on Wednesday. Batwe and Akshay were training a host of young swimmers in the lake when they heard of a girl jumping into it attempting suicide). Batwe instantly signalled (through sign language) Akshay to reach out for the girl, who was about 150 metres away. Akshay swung into action, reached the spot and saved the girl from drowning.

 

Another swimmer Ishan Pande ran towards the location near filter plant and then entered Ambazari waters. Akshay and Ishan then brought her out. Parents of the girl offered money to Akshay who politely refused saying that it was his duty to save lives. Everybody present there praised his effort and sense of duty towards humanity. Batwe said that credit must also go to NMC who had recently cleared most part of the lake from water hyacinth. “Had those water weeds still been there, the girl’s life could not have been saved,” said Batwe.
