The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has planned a crackdown against unauthorised constructions, illegal changes of land use, and buildings with fire safety non-compliance. As per the plan, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) would seal or demolish at least 100 such buildings this month. This was decided in a meeting chaired by Mayor Neeta Thakre at the Standing Committee Hall, on Saturday. During the meeting, instructions were given to officers concerned of all ten municipal zones, to identify at least ten priority non-compliant structures -- ranging from malls, commercial complexes, and hospitals to godowns, tuition classes, and bars for immediate joint enforcement action, bringing the total to at least 100 targeted establishments across city.

 

The review meeting was attended by Ruling Party Leader Narendra Borkar, Civil Works Committee Chairperson, Fire and Emergency Services Committee Chairperson Rupali Thakur, Additional Municipal Commissioners Ankit and Milind Meshram, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Khawale, Assistant Municipal Commissioners of all ten zones, Chief Fire Officer Tushar Barahate, Divisional Fire Officers, and Town Planning officials. To eliminate chronic departmental delays and administrative bottlenecks, the Mayor directed that all future actions be conducted through joint task forces comprising the Fire Department, Zonal Offices, Enforcement Department, and Town Planning Department, with police assistance deployed whenever necessary.

 

A primary driver for this unified approach is the disparity in departmental enforcement powers. While the Fire Department holds statutory powers under fire safety laws to immediately seal premises posing an imminent danger, zonal offices under standard municipal acts are constrained by mandatory 45 to 60 days notice windows. By integrating town planning data specifically comparing sanctioned building blueprints against actual ground-level usage joint task forces can immediately identify discrepancies and execute prompt sealing or demolition. Under the ‘NMC in Action Mode’ framework scheduled to run from August 8 to September 8, each zone is required to conduct field verifications and submit comprehensive photo-documented reports detailing building ownership, structural violations, and fire safety compliance. Establishments sealed for severe fire hazards will only be granted temporary access for installing mandatory safety systems, with no commercial operations permitted until full compliance is achieved. In addition to the enforcement, the civic administration will initiate public awareness campaigns regarding building permissions and fire safety, ensuring progress reports are submitted directly to the Mayor and senior executive leadership.
