OPEN drain chambers and uncovered nullahs in several parts of the city have become a serious safety concern, especially during the rainy season. Sanitation workers reportedly open chambers while cleaning drains and nullahs but fail to cover them properly afterwards. As a result, several deep chambers remain exposed on roads and near residential areas. The situation becomes more dangerous during rains. Water accumulates on roads and around the open chambers, making them difficult to notice. The chambers often get completely covered by rainwater. Pedestrians, children, elderly persons and two-wheeler riders may accidentally fall into them. In some places, broken slabs and stones have been placed near the openings as temporary arrangements.

 

However, these measures are inadequate and cannot ensure public safety. Residents said, open chambers are a common sight in many localities. They have expressed concern over the negligence of Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC). A major accident can occur if pedestrian or vehicle enters an uncovered chamber. The problem is particularly serious during heavy rainfall and at night when visibility is poor. Water-logged roads make it almost impossible to identify the dangerous openings. Residents have demanded that the JMC immediately conduct a survey of all open drains and nullah chambers in the city. Proper and strong covers should be installed without delay. The civic body must also ensure that sanitation workers close every chamber after completing cleaning work. Regular monitoring is needed to prevent such negligence. With the monsoon continuing, immediate action is necessary. A small lapse today may lead to a serious accident tomorrow.
