A POTENTIALLY serious mishap was averted at the popular Dangari Waterfall in Jashpur district on Sunday after seven tourists were trapped in the powerful current of a rain-swollen river and subsequently rescued following a strenuous operation involving local villagers, administration and rescue personnel. The incident occurred amid persistent rainfall in the region, which has caused rivers and hill streams to swell considerably. According to information available from the area, the tourists were caught in the strong current while visiting the waterfall and found themselves unable to move to safety. On receiving information about their predicament, local villagers rushed to the spot and joined the rescue effort. Administration and rescue personnel also reached the area. After sustained efforts in difficult conditions, all seven tourists were brought out safely. No casualty was reported. The episode has again highlighted the risks associated with visiting waterfalls and crossing swollen streams during the monsoon.

 

Local residents said tourists continue to venture towards the waterfall despite increased water levels, often crossing fast-flowing stretches and hill streams to reach the attraction. Situated between Sulesa and Pandrapath in Bagicha development block, Dangari Waterfall is among Jashpur district’s scenic tourist destinations. Three streams of water reportedly plunge from a height of around 100 feet, drawing visitors from Chhattisgarh as well as neighbouring States. During heavy monsoon spells, however, water levels can rise rapidly and transform otherwise accessible stretches into hazardous crossings. Local residents alleged that adequate warning boards have not been installed around the waterfall despite the seasonal danger. They maintained that prominent cautionary signage and stronger safety arrangements are necessary to alert visitors unfamiliar with changing river conditions.
