Nagpur Traffic Police have stepped up action against parents and vehicle owners who allow minors to drive vehicles. Courts have secured convictions in 26 cases registered in 2026 for allowing minors to drive. In each case, the accused parents was fined Rs 30,000. The action was taken under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. Under Section 199A, a fine of Rs 25,000 was imposed. DCP Traffic Aditya Mirkhelkar said parents must understand that handing over a vehicle to a minor can have serious consequences. “Allowing a minor to drive is not just a traffic violation. It puts the child as well as other road users at risk,” he said. Mirkhelkar said minors do not have the required maturity and also do not possess a valid driving licence.

 

“Parents and vehicle owners must not hand over their vehicles to minors. The responsibility begins at home. Giving the vehicle keys to a child can put lives at risk and can also result in legal action against the parents or owner,” he said. Traffic police said the action would continue throughout the city. The department is focusing on preventing accidents and discouraging minors from driving two-wheelers and other motor vehicles. Police have urged parents to cooperate with the traffic department and ensure that their children do not drive until they are legally eligible to obtain a driving licence. Officials said strict action would be taken against parents or vehicle owners found allowing minors to drive. The Traffic police has also appealed to citizens to understand that the law is aimed at protecting minors as well as other people using city roads.
