THE Bhopal bench of National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) has taken cognisance of alleged illegal constructions within 100 metres of the Van Vihar National Park boundary. The tribunal has directed the Van Vihar director and Madhya Pradesh Chief Wildlife Warden to take necessary action in accordance with law. Prempura area included in zone: A letter petition before the tribunal stated that a 100-metre stretch along the park boundary had been designated as an ecosensitive zone to protect wildlife and reduce human-animal conflict. The boundary of Van Vihar was earlier demarcated by a joint committee of the Revenue and Forest departments. Multi-storey buildings allegedly built: According to the petition, the Prempura village area falls within the 100-metre eco-sensitive zone.

 

The complainant alleged that several multi-storey buildings have already been constructed in the restricted area and that new construction activity is continuing. Park management facing allegations: The petition alleged that effective action had not been taken against the constructions by the Van Vihar management. The complainant also raised concerns that such development could adversely affect the park’s environment and ecosystem. Three-month action report ordered: The NGT directed that copies of the petition and its order be sent to the director of Van Vihar National Park and Zoo and the Chief Wildlife Warden. Both officials have been asked to take action as per law and submit details of the action taken to the registrar of the NGT Central Zone Bench within three months.
