Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) is exploring possibility of developing a modern jail in Wardha, one designed to meet modern standards with capacity to house up to 1,000 inmates. The present Central Jail is spread over 15.5 acres and was developed by the British in 1845 and condition of the structure is not that good. The Maharashtra Government with a view to increase the jail capacity is combining the project with redevelopment of existing jail land, it is now centrally located and has prime business value.

 

The MSIDC is trying to combine the two aspects, one leverage the existing site of Wardha Central Jail for commercial exploitation and inter alia develop a sprawling new jail with modern facilities and expanded capacity,” stated Naresh Borkar, Executive Engineer, MSIDC. He said the idea is right now at planning stage. MSIDC has invited prospective plan from urban planners to present best possible way to leverage present Central Jail land from commercial point of view.

 

The plan for new Central Jail at Wardha is to move it beyond the confines of city. About 119 acres of land in Mouze Inzapur, adjoining Wardha city is identified for locating the new Jail, reveals the MISDC documents. As to existing site, it is about 62,700 square metres, a strategically located Government land which enjoys excellent regional and city-wide connectivity. MSIDC is seeking to appoint a Consultant to undertake a study of the existing jail land and suggest suitable development plan, including landscape design. The corporation has termed its plan as Sustainable and Holistic Redevelopment of Central Jail site at Wardha through either PoP or BoT basis.
