Travelling from Nagpur to Gwalior or Bengaluru could become significantly faster in the coming years, with two major greenfield expressway projects moving through the planning stage and promising to reshape long-distance connectivity from central India. The proposed Nagpur– Gwalior economic corridor, for which the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being handled by NHAI’s Bhopal regional office, is envisaged as a six-lane access-controlled greenfield highway linking Nagpur with Gwalior via Betul, Narmadapuram, Raisen, Bhopal, Vidisha, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri and Morena. The corridor is expected to connect with the Agra–Gwalior highway in the north and the Nagpur–Mumbai highway network in the south.

 

According to preliminary planning documents, the corridor will function as an economic and logistics backbone across Madhya Pradesh, with industrial clusters and logistics hubs proposed along the route. The project is expected to facilitate faster movement of agricultural produce, pharmaceuticals, spices, fruits and vegetables to major consumption centres and export gateways. Officials associated with the project have indicated that the highway is being planned with limited access points at intervals of around 50-60 kilometres, allowing higher average travel speeds. With this, travel time between Gwalior and Nagpur is expected to reduce substantially compared with existing highway routes passing through multiple urban centres. Simultaneously, the DPR for a new high-speed corridor connecting Nagpur with Hyderabad and further south is also under preparation. NHAI officials said the proposed expressway may be linked to the planned extension of Samruddhi Expressway towards Chandrapur, creating a continuous high-speed route towards Telangana and Karnataka.

 

The southern corridor could prove transformative for passenger and freight movement. Once integrated with upcoming highway projects, road travel time between Nagpur and Hyderabad is expected to reduce sharply, while connectivity towards Bengaluru would also improve considerably. Together, the two proposed greenfield expressways would strengthen Nagpur’s position as India’s geographic transport centre. With faster travel, reduced logistics costs and improved industrial connectivity, the projects have the potential to bring north and south India significantly closer to Vidarbha, while opening new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment across the region.
