The Maharashtra Government has officially declared Nagpur district as a ‘Tourism District’, recognising its rich natural, wildlife, religious, historical and cultural heritage and its immense tourism potential. The decision was taken under the Maharashtra Tourism Policy-2016 and was notified by the Tourism Department through a Government Resolution. Nagpur district has been historically, geographically, naturally and culturally rich since ancient times. Nagpur, the State’s second capital, is Maharashtra’s second-largest city and is also known as one of India’s greenest cities. Geographically located almost at the centre of India, Nagpur is a major road and transport hub, with Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata located at almost equal distances.

 

The historic Zero Mile Stone, established during the British period, symbolises Nagpur’s geographical significance as the centre point of the country. The district also has a rich historical legacy. Nagpur remained a centre of power under the Gond rulers and the Bhonsle dynasty, with several historical structures and forts from the Gond and Bhonsle periods still standing in the district. Known worldwide as the ‘Orange City’, Nagpur is also recognised as the ‘Tiger Capital of India’ owing to its proximity to major wildlife destinations, including Pench National Park and Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary.

 

The district also has significant religious and cultural tourism attractions, including the ancient Ram Temple at Ramtek, the water sports centre at Khadakwasla and Deekshabhoomi. Its gardens, folk arts, handicrafts and tribal folk dance traditions further add to its tourism potential. Considering Nagpur’s geographical importance, historical heritage and vast tourism potential, the Government had earlier declared the district a ‘Special Tourism District’ under Chapter 9(1) of the Tourism Policy-2016. The latest Government Resolution now formally declares Nagpur district as a ‘Tourism District’. The decision is aimed at ensuring comprehensive development of the district’s tourism resources, promoting tourism and creating greater opportunities for local employment and economic growth. The Government expects the new status to provide an impetus to the development and promotion of Nagpur’s natural, wildlife, religious, historical and cultural tourism destinations.
