In spite of an improved version of policing and continued hectic efforts made by the police, the crime graph is always on the rise in Nagpur city. The recent directive of the Police Commissioner towards visibility of policemen on the streets, ‘CP proposes, cops dispose’ in CityLine September 17, is another step for improvement in the police system.
Preventive steps will always help in minimising the
crimes. Every police station maintains the list of anti-social elements residing and
operating under their jurisdiction.
If the activities of these anti-social elements are checked and periodically monitored by every police station then there will be a drastic fall in the rate of crime. But the fact is the policemen are overburdened with already allotted routine assignments and are mostly engaged in post-crime related works. There is a growing need to create an ‘Anti-social Monitoring Cell’ under every police station manned by new recruits of ex-servicemen.
Nuisance Detection Squads (NDS) of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), manned mostly by ex-servicemen, are helping in managing their affairs. Likewise, Nagpur city police needs to take the services of ex-servicemen.
The role of the proposed cell will involve regular interaction with anti-socials and monitoring their activities. It should be ensured that at no point of time the anti-socials are given free hand to operate.
Better policing will definitely yield good results.
