An auto-rickshaw driver displayed exemplary honesty by returning a bag containing cash, gold and other valuables worth around Rs 4.75 lakh to a woman who had lost it while shopping. The incident came to light at Lakadganj police station after Mamta Naresh Yadav, a government teacher from Yadav Nagar, lodged a complaint on August 31. Mamta had lost her bag near Amar Talkies while she was out shopping. The bag contained Rs 1.75 lakh in cash, a gold ring weighing 1.5 tolas and valued at around Rs 2.5 lakh, a mobile phone worth around Rs 50,000 and three ATM/debit cards. While police were investigating the complaint, auto-rickshaw driver Sachin Motiramji Nikhare (40), of Vinoba Bhave Nagar, found the bag on September 1.

 

Nikhare did not keep the valuables. He immediately approached the Lakadganj police and handed over the bag. Police then returned it to Mamta. “Sachin showed exemplary honesty and social responsibility. He could have kept the valuables, but he chose to hand them over to the police. His act sets a good example for society,” said Senior Police Inspector Mukunda Kawade. Lakadganj police felicitated Nikhare for his honesty and presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation. Police appealed to citizens to follow Nikhare’s example and cooperate with the police in such situations.
