A SERIOUS sanitation problem has emerged around the Futatal high-capacity overhead tank in the heart of the city. The area near the water tank has gradually turned into an unofficial garbage dumping site. Large heaps of waste can be seen lying around the site. The situation is causing inconvenience to local residents and raising concerns over public health. Dozens of stray animals are seen around the garbage throughout the day. They often feed on the waste, which can be harmful to their health and may also create risks for people living nearby. The garbage heaps are also emitting a foul smell. The stench has made the surroundings unpleasant. Residents said the waste has been accumulating for long time and regular cleaning is not being carried out properly. Local residents said people often throw garbage at the spot. They also alleged that although garbage collection vehicles collect waste from the area, the garbage heaps are not cleared properly. As a result, waste continues to accumulate. The location of the dumping spot is a matter of particular concern as it is close to a water tank used for supplying drinking water to a large area.

 

While the garbage may not directly contaminate the water inside the tank, the poor sanitation around a drinking water infrastructure is a serious public health and environmental concern. The condition also raises questions about the monitoring of sanitation work by the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation. The civic body has been focusing on improving its performance in Swachh Survekshan, but such neglected spots present a different picture on the ground. Residents have urged the JMC to immediately remove the garbage heaps, clean the area and ensure regular monitoring. They have also sought steps to prevent people from using the spot as a dumping ground. The condition around a drinking water facility calls for timely attention. Regular cleaning and strict monitoring are needed to prevent the area from turning into a permanent dumping yard.
