The Department of Ophthalmology at All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) has successfully performed a complex retinal surgery on a 13-month-old child suffering from Grade 5 Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), with blindness in both eyes. ROP is a potentially blinding condition affecting premature babies, particularly those requiring prolonged neonatal intensive care and oxygen therapy. In severe cases, abnormal retinal blood vessel development can cause complete retinal detachment and blindness. Considering the child’s condition and the family’s financial constraints, the surgery was undertaken at AIIMS Nagpur. According to the institute, it is the first such surgery performed at a government facility in Central India.

 

The technically demanding procedure requires advanced instrumentation, specialised skills and a state-of- the-art setup. Dr Vandana Iyer, Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon, said the child can now perceive light and objects close to the face following the surgery. The other eye is expected to be operated on soon. Prof Dr Prashant Joshi, Executive Director and CEO, AIIMS Nagpur, termed the achievement a major advancement in retinal surgery. Dr Puja Hingorani-Bang, Professor and Head, Department of Ophthalmology, said the facility now provides the complete continuum of ROP care, from screening and injections to laser treatment and surgery.
