A FRESH weather system over the Bay of Bengal has raised hopes of more rain in Jabalpur and other parts of eastern Madhya Pradesh during the final days of the monsoon season. According to the latest weather update, the depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwest. It is likely to intensify into a deep depression before crossing the north Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast between the night of September 23 and the morning of September 24. The system is expected to bring increased rain activity over eastern Madhya Pradesh. Jabalpur district may receive moderate to heavy showers from September 24 to 26. Rain may continue at intervals over the following days as the system moves inland and weakens.

 

The developing weather conditions have also raised hopes of a further improvement in Jabalpur’s rainfall tally this monsoon. The city has received 783.8 mm of rain so far this year, compared with 1,161 mm during the same period last year. Thus the Sanskardhani has received 377.2 mm less rain or about 48 per cent lesser rainfall, than last year. The monsoon season officially ends on September 30. With only a few days left, the fresh weather system could add more rain to the seasonal total. Residents can expect generally cloudy conditions and intermittent showers during the next few days. Heavy spells may also lead to temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas and affect traffic at some places.
