No boarding pass scan, no repeated document checks - just a face scan to enter the airport. Nagpur Airport has introduced a single-step face recognition facility at all its DigiYatra-enabled gates, allowing registered passengers to enter through the gates using facial authentication alone. GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited (GNIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Airports Ltd, said the upgrade is aimed at making passenger movement faster, seamless and contactless while reducing manual intervention at the entry point.

 

Under the earlier DigiYatra process, passengers had to register on the DigiYatra app, complete facial authentication, link their boarding pass and scan the boarding pass at the DigiYatra-enabled entry gate. The system would then verify the travel details before allowing entry through facial recognition. With the new system, passengers who have already completed registration on the DigiYatra app and linked their boarding pass can simply approach the designated gate. The facial recognition system authenticates their identity and automatically opens the gate, eliminating the need to scan the boarding pass at the entry point. The facility is expected to reduce waiting time and make the verification process more convenient, particularly during busy travel periods.

 

Passengers can continue to use facial recognition at other DigiYatra-enabled checkpoints across the airport. Speaking about the development, Srikanth Bhandarkar, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), GNIAL, said enhancing passenger experience remains a key focus at Nagpur Airport. He said the upgrade would make the passenger journey more seamless, faster and convenient by simplifying verification and reducing manual interventions.

 

The airport said the initiative is part of GMR Airports’ efforts to leverage technology to simplify passenger movement and improve operational efficiency. The single-step system builds on the existing DigiYatra infrastructure while making the airport-entry process more streamlined. For using the facility, passengers still need to register on the DigiYatra app, complete facial authentication and link their boarding pass before reaching the airport. The key change is at the entry gate, where facial recognition now replaces the boarding pass scanning step.
