A UNION Bank branch manager was allegedly assaulted by a borrower while he went to recover an overdue gold loan in Gali No. 9 under the jurisdiction of Cantt police station, on Tuesday. The incident triggered protests by bank employees and officials at the Cantt police station. In the attack, bank manager Manish Sangya, sustained injuries on his nose and face. Bank employees accompanying him were also assaulted and cash collected for recovery from other loan accounts was snatched during the incident. According to bank employees, Sangya, manager of Union Bank’s Gwarighat branch, along with his team reached at the residence of a borrower in Sadar’s Gali No. 9. The borrower failed to repay his gold loan for a prolonged period despite repeated notices, calls and messages from the bank regarding the overdue amount.

 

The employees informed police that when Sangya and his team reached the borrower’s house and asked him to clear the outstanding dues, an argument broke out. The borrower began abusing the bank officials and assaulted the manager. The situation escalated when the accused attacked Sangya causing a serious injury to his nose. Other members of the recovery team were also beaten. After receiving information about the attack, several bank employees and senior officials from the regional office reached the Cantt police station and staged a protest, demanding action against the accused. Bank officials also informed the police that Sangya was carrying approximately Rs 15,000 to Rs 16,000 collected towards recovery from other accounts which was forcibly taken by the accused. Following the incident, the injured manager and senior bank officials reached Cantt police station. Injured was sent to District Hospital for medical treatment and police have started investigation into the incident.
