THE State Government has approved an increase in the monthly stipend of MBBS interns of Government Medical Colleges in Chhattisgarh to Rs 25,000. The Medical Education Department issued the order on Thursday, stating that the revised stipend will come into effect from October 1, 2026. The decision was taken on the basis of a proposal submitted by the Directorate of Medical Education and with the concurrence of the Finance Department. The order comes amid a protest by the Junior Doctors Association (JDA), which has been pressing the State Government to accept its 17- point charter of demands. The demands include a hike in stipends for MBBS interns, bonded Medical Officers, PG residents and Senior Residents, besides reduction of the UG and PG service bond period from two years to one year.

 

The JDA had warned of an indefinite strike from September 24 if its demands were not addressed by September 23. The association had earlier held a peaceful protest and a candle march at Government Medical College, Raipur. According to the JDA, a delegation had met the Health Minister around 15 days ago and submitted its demands. The delegation was reportedly assured that necessary orders would be issued soon. The association has also demanded that the proposed reduction in the service bond period be made applicable to existing batches of doctors. The Government’s decision to revise the stipend for MBBS interns addresses one of the key demands raised by the junior doctors.
